In August 2024, Professor May was appointed as the first Chair of the North West Neurosurgery Network. He spent four decades at The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust as a Consultant Neurosurgeon, where he founded the paediatric neurosurgical service at Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust.

Professor May has held national leadership roles including President of the Society of British Neurological Surgeons and National Clinical Lead for Adolescent and Paediatric Neurosurgery under the Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) programme. In 2012 he was appointed as the first chair of the Neurosurgery Clinical Reference Group and from 2013 to 2019 he chaired the Trauma Programme of Care Board for NHS England. He also serves as Director of Clinical Academic Development at the University of Liverpool and is a Non‑Executive Director on The Walton Centre board. In 2026 he was awarded an MBE for services to neurosurgery and charitable fundraising.
